How To Watch TV Shows For Free: Avoid Paying For Cable

by Mike on February 5, 2010

We don’t have cable. Not because we can’t afford it, but because I don’t think we need it. You pay for tons of channels you never watch — it’s a big waste of money. I think it’s completely unnecessary. I rather simply things down to the mere essentials. And frankly, cable doesn’t cut it.

If I did have cable, the only channels I’d ever watch, anyway, would be: The Discovery Channel, MuchMusic, CTV, and The Weather Network. But you can watch all these online for free, without having to pay for cable. So what’s the point in paying for cable when you can watch the same shows over the internet — a service you already pay for?

When I use to live with my mom and when we had cable, there was never anything good on anyway. You spent more time flicking through the channels and watching commercials than watching a TV show.

Pay-per-views you say? While I don’t watch anything that would require the need to buy a pay-per-view, but if I did, I still wouldn’t need cable. You can easily find your favourite pay-per-view online, via searching for it on Google or on The Pirate Bay (you’ll need uTorrent to download .torrent files, small and free program; learn how to use the program at the bottom of this post).

I often watch The Colbert Report (awesome show, a must watch), Daily Planet, Grey’s Anatomy and Desperate Housewives (don’t judge me lol). Michelle watches The Vampire Diaries. And they’re all online for free.

And it makes it a lot easier too, especially when you can’t be home to watch it on TV; you set when when you watch it — you’re not at the mercy of the TV.

And do we really need 50 music channels, when we have MuchMusic, Youtube, and the ability to download and create playlists all for free?

The only downfall is difficulty watching, for example, live events — like sports or whatever. But isn’t that a small price to pay, not being able to watch something live — for getting your TV shows for free? I think you’ll live.

Also, some TV shows aren’t available online, like CSI and Dexter, I think. But you can download them from sites like The Pirate Bay or even on Youtube — just google them.

It’s worth saving hundreds of dollars a year, isn’t it? I think so.

Oh, and you don’t need to pay for the movie channel, neither, because you can download just about any movie that is out on DVD from The Pirate Bay and similar sites. In fact, you don’t ever have to rent or buy a movie ever again. It only takes a couple hours to download it too, if you have a half-decent internet connection which most people should have in 2010.

So, now you’ll spend more time watching the shows you want online for free and less time wasting time flicking from channel to channel and paying to watch commercials and wind up watching nothing because you can’t find anything to watch.

How to download movies, etc from The Pirate Bay with uTorrent

  1. Download and install uTorrent. It should be pretty straight-forward, mostly common sense.
  2. Find the movie or other file on The Pirate Bay that you want to download.
  3. On that movie’s or other file’s page, and near the top, you should see two options:  “DOWNLOAD THIS TORRENT” and “MAGNET LINK”
  4. The easiest way is just click on the “MAGNET LINK” link and then it should automatically open up uTorrent and begin downloading it for you. Or you could click on “DOWNLOAD TORRENT FILE” and then download the file to your computer, open up uTorrent, go to File –> Add Torrent…, and select that torrent you just downloaded to your computer. It should begin to download automatically.
  5. Any troubles, just leave me a common and I’ll help you out.
